Puppy Awareness Week - Advice

buying a puppy

The results of The Kennel Club’s Puppy Awareness Week survey show that:

• More than 3 in 5 find a pup online and buy it before seeing it
• 1 in 5 don’t see the puppy with its mum
• 2 in 5 choose a puppy simply because of how it looks, without taking time to understand its health, temperament or exercise needs

Of those who did some research, red flags were still missed:

• 90% weren’t asked any questions by the breeder about their suitability for dog ownership
• 83% didn’t see relevant health tests for the parents

Why is this important?

While there are lots of passionate, experienced dog breeders producing healthy, well-socialised puppies, there are as many who take advantage of our 'instant gratification' culture and produce puppies with only profit in mind. Conditions in puppy farms or large scale breeding enterprises can be truly awful as a result.

This leaves buyers at risk of obtaining a puppy bred in poor conditions with long term health or behavioural consequences, or that is simply the wrong fit for their family and lifestyle. A dog is likely to be with your family for 10+ years - we want them to have the best chance of a long, healthy and happy life with you.

What can I do?

Help us to protect dog welfare and stamp out puppy farming - looking to buy a puppy, or know someone who is? Direct them to The Puppy Contract, a free toolkit developed to encourage the responsible breeding and buying of puppies.

Developed by a group including Dogs Trust, RSPCA, PDSA and the British Veterinary Association, the Puppy Contract is designed to ensure that buyers have all of the information they need to make an informed decision and the best chance of buying a healthy and happy puppy.

Depending on your circumstances, adopting a puppy from a rescue centre can be a rewarding alternative and they will provide help and support in choosing the right dog for you, as well as lifetime backup with training and behaviour.
