Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month - meet the rest of the team - the Patient Care Assistant

During Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month we’re also taking the opportunity to introduce you to some other members of the practice team. Meet Carina one of our Patient Care Assistants (PCAs). At Severn Edge our PCAs wear navy blue tunics.

Like our receptionists no two days are ever the same for a PCA and their busy, varied role is absolutely invaluable to the rest of the team. They are responsible for all aspects of patient care including (under the direction of the RVN or veterinary surgeon) monitoring inpatients, providing food, water and exercise, administering prescribed oral and topical medications and restraining patients for procedures like injections or blood sampling.

Adhering to all health and safety and practice protocols they are also responsible for cleaning and maintaining kennels, cattery, theatre and consulting rooms. They often also assist with reception duties.

While no formal qualifications are needed many of our PCAs hold vocational qualifications in animal care and work experience as a PCA is often a route towards enrolling as a student veterinary nurse.
